Separation of sugar beet in the field

Figure: Test recording of young sugar beet plants in the field with shading device.

Feasibility study of a mechanical separation technique of beet plants at different stages of development. The manual separation of young plants in the field is very labor intensive. Therefore, we first tested the automatability of the detection of beet seed plants and weeds within a row planting. The following decision whether or not to remove the plant should be made manually by an operator on the screen. The challenge was mainly due to the changing lighting intensities that prevail in the open field. However, many disruptive factors could be corrected by suitable shading devices.

Setup:

  • Choosing a suitable camera and lighting
  • Provision of an image processing program
  • Image preparation and software concept for the operator
